Chapter One: Introduction

1.1 Background of the Study

Photography has emerged as a powerful tool in disaster communication, providing visual evidence that conveys the urgency and scale of disasters. It serves as a critical medium for informing the public, mobilizing support, and guiding disaster response efforts. In Damaturu Local Government Area, Yobe State, photography plays a pivotal role in documenting the impact of natural and man-made disasters, from flooding to insurgency-related destruction. According to recent studies by Musa and Bello (2024), visual imagery not only raises awareness but also elicits emotional responses that drive humanitarian action. Despite its potential, the use of photography in disaster communication in Damaturu is limited by challenges such as inadequate training for photographers, lack of access to advanced equipment, and minimal integration into disaster management frameworks. This study examines the effectiveness of photography in disaster communication, focusing on its contributions, challenges, and potential for enhancing disaster response in Damaturu.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

While photography is a vital component of disaster communication, its impact in Damaturu is constrained by challenges such as limited access to professional photographers, lack of resources, and insufficient integration into disaster management strategies. These limitations hinder the ability of photography to effectively convey the urgency of disasters and mobilize adequate support. Existing studies on disaster communication often focus on textual and verbal communication, with limited attention to the role of photography in local contexts like Damaturu (Ahmed & Yusuf, 2023). This study addresses this gap by evaluating the effectiveness of photography in disaster communication in Damaturu.
